This loop walk is a great way to spend a day exploring Lochbuie. Lochbuie is a lovely spot on the south-east of the island, approximately 1-1.5-hour drive from the Bellachroy Hotel. The old post office at Lochbuie opened in 2020. It is a small cafe with outside benches and great views out to sea. Excellent for a post walk coffee and cake treat.
The old post office is where to park your car and it is the start and finish of the walk.
The loop walk is approximately two hours with well-marked tracks, and it is flat. The landmarks along the way are: St Kildas church ; Moy castle ; Laggan sands ; mausoleum (formerly medieval chapel) ; stone circle.
Start the walk by turning left as you face the sea. Follow the track and pass St Kildas church on the left. Continue along the track and follow the footpath signs. You will pass Lochbuie House on your left (built 1752) former home to the Chief of Clan McLaine. Moy Castle is straight ahead (C15th). The path continues straight on past Moy Castle, take the right-hand track signposted to Laggan Sands. Continue along the track and keep right. Walk along Laggan Sands to the end where you can see the former chapel in the feild to the left. You can cross through the gate into the field to investigate the chapel which is now a mausoleum to the McLaine family.
Retrace your steps back across the beach. When you reach the T junction in the track take the right turn. The track passes some cottages. Continue on the track and keep right until you reach the road, here you turn left. This road leads back to the where you parked your car completing the Lochbuie loop walk. You can take a small detour off to a stone circle on the left (it is a boggy field).
